Research Seminar: A Leeds-Sheffield double bill

Please join us for a research seminar organised by the Centre for Jewish Studies, with presentations by colleagues from the University of Leeds and University of Sheffield.

Organised by the Centre for Jewish Studies, this seminar is free and all are welcome. Speakers include:

Dr Anne Caldwell, Teaching Fellow, School of History, University of Leeds: Bomberg and Rubin in Palestine

Dr Anne Caldwell will be discussing the divergent relationship with which David Bomberg and Reuven Rubin perceived Palestine, the land, and its people. For the famous art critic PG Konody, Bomberg’s work reflected his perspective as “the alien tourist", while Rubin was “the first national painter of the Zionist Palestine State”.

This talk is part of a larger research project that asks: How can artists with similar backgrounds not only produce such seemingly contrasting visions, but be seen as connecting with Palestine in very different ways?

Dr Mor Cohen, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, Department of Geography, University of Sheffield: Genealogies, discourses and sites of Mizrahi art

Dr Mor Cohen’s talk will provide an introduction to Mizrahi art and its place within the cultural and political field in Israel. By examining three art catalogues who brought to the forefront marginalised artistic and activist legacies, the talk will rethink Mizrahi art beyond identity politics and multicultural framings that tend to deradicalise and sectorilise its transgressive possibilities.

The event will be chaired by Dr Eva Frojmovic, Associate Professor in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Jewish Studies.
